Food — a collaborative list of favorite NYC eateries

  • My favorite Chinese food is at Wo Hop in Chinatown. It's down the stairs. Not fancy. Not costly. Great food! Just like 12 years ago when I lived there. It's open for lunch and dinner. (I take my friends there whenever I'm in NYC, as you can see here.)

  • Best Pizza — and after a great walk! Michael Bourke tells me (and an entire email list) that some of the city's (and therefore the world's) best pizza can be had at Grimaldi's, on old Fulton Street under the bridge. He says, "they have one of the few coal-fired pizza ovens in the city, grandfathered in from whatever zoning regulation banned them; the jukebox plays all Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett; the walls are lined with fake wood paneling and B&W glossies of the many visiting luminaries over the years. No reservations, first come first served, and barbecued duck is definitely not a topping. Actually, the crusts are crispy and thin, with just the right amount of fresh mozzarella and fresh tomato (no sauce, no paste) on top. garlic, basil, etc. to taste."

  • Visit the River Cafe in Brooklyn for the great view of Manhattan. It's under the Brooklyn Bridge. It is one of the most sought-after (and expensive) dinner tables in NYC; definitely not someplace to drop by after walking over from Manhattan.

  • There's a good pizza place right at the bridge that's not costly. I enjoyed it.

  • One person's suggestion is the Stage Deli.

  • Another recommends "a funky Indian restaurant in the East Village at 6th which is decorated with so many chili pepper and fairy lights you can't stand up straight." She says, "There are actually 2 of them side by side, the more popular one is the one on the right. They don't serve alcohol, but you can buy your own in a variety store around the corner and bring it in.

  • Personally, I like pizza and NY is the only place for real pizza (ok, Chicago too). Just pick a busy pizza shop and try a slice. People used to rave about Rays, but I felt it wasn't any better than the rest.
