Deb's Palm™ Handheld Pages

This section of my site is the start of a series of pages on how to use your Palm™ Handheld with Mac OS X. I've created several tutorials and I also point you to other tutorials and info.

How to Add Photos or mp3s to Your Palm handheld or its SD Card

Discussion: there are three ways to do this. One is to use the Send To Handheld AppleScript applet as shown here. It's kind of the easier way, but neither is difficult. Another is to add the files via the Install Handheld Files window. I call that installing manually. Both of these methods ultimately use HotSync method. The third method is to transfer files to the SD card by mounting it as a volumn on your hard drive. (I may add info on that here eventually.)

Step 1:

Drag the desired photo from it's location on your hard drive onto the Send To Handheld AppleScript applet, as shown here.

[If the applet is in your Dock you can drag your photo onto it there too.]

This launches the applet and the Hot Synch manager. You'll see them appear in the Dock.

Step 2:

If you have more than one user, choose the desired user from the pop-up menu.

Step 3:

If your Palm handheld has an SDIO slot, choose either the handheld or the SecureDigital (SD) card as your Destination.

NOTE: Files such as mp3, .mov, or .avi can only be installed onto the handheld. The Handheld option is not there.

Step 4:

Click OK.

You will then see this notice telling you that the files will be installed during your next HotSync operation.

Click OK. Then perform your HotSync operation at your convenience.

What's happening behind the scenes?

On your hard drive, you have a folder called Palm. In that is a folder called Users. In there is a folder whose name matches your user name.

The photo you dropped on to the Applet has been copied into the Photos folder within your user-named folder so it can be copied to your Palm handheld or the SD card upon your next Hot Sync.

Tip:

There are several ways to give yourself easy access to the Send To Handheld applet

  • Dock the Send To Handheld applet. That way you can drop photos onto it in the Dock.
  • Dock your Palm folder. That way you can open it easily to see and use the applet.
  • Make your Palm folder a Favoriite. Again, this way you can open it easily and use the applet.
